Thorp Academy Sixth Form has a well established history of academy success and a reputation for excellence in Outer West Gateshead.
Every student considering studying at Thorp 6th Form will have a one-to-one meeting with a member of the 6th Form team to discuss their post-16 options. The following subjects are available:
Each student will be supported in their choices, ensuring they have a structured and challenging learning programme that supports their progression in line with their career plans.
Students can take a purely A Level pathway, a purely Applied General (or vocational) pathway or a mix of both.
Students who have not achieved a grade 4 at GCSE English or Maths will be enrolled onto the relevant GCSE course to re-sit the subject. They will have timetabled English and/or Maths lessons and will sit mock exams throughout the academic year.
All of our year 12 students complete one week of work experience during the summer term. This is invaluable experience and gives students the opportunity to develop career choices and develop their skills in a real working environment.
Our students are expected to complete 20 hours of volunteering during year 12. Many of our students exceed this amount, with some going on to achieve more than 100 hours by the end of year 13.
Our enrichment programme allows students to develop their character and skills. Students can take a Sports Leaders qualification, train to be a Youth Link Mentor, complete an Extended Project Qualification or a Level 3 Core Maths qualification.
The NET Sports Academy will launch in September with students competing with other local 6th Forms and colleges in Netball and Football. Training will take place every Wednesday afternoon and full training kit will be provided.
Our senior students organise charitable events in school and support younger students on Student Voice committees. Our Anti Bullying Ambassadors are all trained through the Diana Trust and have trained staff and students within school. Students can volunteer as peer mentors with younger students within a subject of their choice.
6th Form students have their own common room and study space. This includes a computer room and quiet study area. Students have full access to the Academy library and all of its resources.
Thorp 6th Form has a strong system of support and guidance. Students receive excellent pastoral and academic advice from the 6th Form Team; this includes daily tutor time, weekly assemblies and LIFE lessons, a dedicated Learning Manager available throughout the school day and an experienced UCAS adviser to guide students through the options available once they complete their studies with us.
We have experienced careers advisers who offer post-16 progression advice from year 12. Students will have a number of 1:1 meetings, assemblies and tutorials on their options beyond 6th form. We actively encourage students to attend University and Apprenticeship open days and welcome many visitors to the school to talk to students in these areas.
A bursary is available to all students joining 6th Form in September. The amount students receive will be dependent on their economic circumstances.
The government’s Post-16 bursary is also available to students facing financial barriers to education at the Academy. More information can be provided on request.
Whether you are new to Thorp Academy or come from our Year 11, you will find a welcoming, supportive and challenging 6th Form where you will be encouraged to work hard and given every opportunity to succeed.
